Mayor's Community Update - 07/30/2018
Greetings! As part of an ongoing focus on continuous improvement, the Waupun Common Council recently approved a resolution to adopt an agreement with the City of Beaver Dam for municipal court services. City staff identified this project as a potential cost-saving opportunity during the budget process and began work to evaluate options for a municipal court in early 2018. Staff evaluated costs of continuing with Dodge and Fond du Lac counties, establishing a local municipal court, or joining an established municipal court in another community. Currently, the city uses either Dodge or Fond du Lac County Circuit Courts, depending on the county where an offense occurs. County courts require the city to pay for an officer and attorney to attend every municipal case handled by the courts. Beginning in October, the Beaver Dam Municipal Court will preside over all municipal ordinance and traffic offenses for the City of Waupun. By partnering with Beaver Dam, the city will only need to pay staff to attend court if a case goes to trial which will save time and labor costs and allow Waupun officers to remain on patrol, protecting our city. This change will conservatively save the city $6,000 annually and will cut ticketing fees by as much as $50 per ticket.
Around town, on Saturday, August 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Waupun Fine Arts invites you to the 2018 Fine Art and Craft Fair at Dodge Park. The show will feature a wide variety of art and craft vendors, food and beverage, and entertainment throughout the day. I hope to see you there!
See you around town! ~ Mayor Julie Nickel
