Mayor & Common Council
The Waupun Common Council, comprised of the Mayor and six aldermen, is the legislative and policy-making body of the City of Waupun. Council members are elected for two-year terms. The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the City, ensuring that ordinances and state laws are observed and enforced and that all officers and employees discharge their duties. Additionally, the Mayor is the head of the fire and police departments. The Mayor chairs meetings of the Council, Committee of the Whole, Planning Commission, Board of Review and the Community Development Authority. The Mayor recommends policies to the Council and breaks any tie votes. The Mayor may veto legislation.
Each Council member serves on at least one of the Council’s 12 standing committees. These standing committees make recommendations to the full body regarding municipal projects, facilities, services, finance and personnel and the community’s health, safety and welfare. The Council has representatives and citizens on the City’s Planning Commission, Library Board, ADA Committee, Board of Health and Human Rights, Community Development Authority, Transit Committee, Zoning Board of Appeals, Utility Commission, Fire and Police Commission, Negotiations Committee, Board of Public Review and Department of Public Works.
The Council is advised and assisted in its duties by the City Administrator and other staff. Additionally, the Council relies on input from residents and recommendations from many volunteer citizen committees to ensure a citizen-centered process.
