Mayor's Community Update - 07/16/2018

Greetings! This week, new playground equipment is being installed at the McCune Park. The McCune Park Master Plan that was put together more than a year ago by the Park and Recreation Committee details a multi-phase plan to revitalize this park and enhance recreational trail connectivity throughout the city. The new playground equipment will enhance safety within the park and can be added to in future phases to expand equipment as part of that Master Plan. City staff continues to look for prospective grants that would help to advance additional phases of this plan.

A special thanks to the Waupun Police and the Park and Recreation Departments for the work they are doing to keep kids safe this summer. On June 22, we had nearly 40 kids participate in our annual bike rodeo to learn about bike safety. Children without bike helmets were provided with a free helmet. One Friday, July 13, the two departments host the annual Fish with Me, Stay Drug Free event at Harris Mill Park. This free event touches many kids each summer who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience fishing with positive adult role models and teaches about the importance of staying drug free.

The Summer Park program is going strong and has two exciting field trip opportunities for kids this summer. On July 20, the group will be canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding at Waterworks Park in Beaver Dam. And, on August 10, the group will visit Prairie Kids Club in Sun Prairie to enjoy an entire building of fun with bounce houses, trampolines, an obstacle course, a foam pit and more. If you are interested in having your child attend, please contact Rachel Kaminski at 920-324-7930 or via email at parks@cityofwaupun.org.

Around town, on Thursday, July 19, Waupun Fine Arts, Inc. will host Beaver Dam Community Band as part of their annual Music in the Park concert series. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Dodge Park. I hope to see you there!

See you around town! ~ Mayor Julie Nickel
