Mayor's Community Update - 03/22/2019
Greetings! City staff held the preconstruction meeting on Thursday, March 21, 2019 for the Madison Street project. Last week the Common Council approved Ptaschinski Construction, a Beaver Dam based contractor, as the low bid on the project. Work from the bridge on North Madison Street south through the Lincoln Street intersection is slated to begin on or around April 1, depending on weather. The project will proceed in phases. The first phase entails South Madison Street with the goal of completing that phase by early August in advance of the Waupun Truck N Show. The second phase of the project involves the South Madison Street portion of the project. This work will begin around June 1 and run through early December. During construction, Madison Street will be closed. If you regularly travel Madison Street you’ll want to plan for alternate routes through the construction period. Please note that this includes routes to and from Rock River Intermediate School.
As far as the furthest southern stretch of Madison Street (Lincoln to the City Limits), late last year, we announced that we will be receiving a WI DOT grant to fund this stretch of road improvement. Staff has been working with the WI DOT and it appears that funding will be allocated to the city to complete this phase of construction beginning in the spring of 2021. Given that this grant will cover nearly $1 million dollars of project costs, staff is now working with the Common Council to review our road improvement plan to explore the addition of some other mill and overlay improvements to potentially occur in the fall of 2019. The roads being considered include Edgewood Drive (Brandon to Autumn); Fond du Street (Main to Rounsville St.); and East Jefferson St. (Railroad tracks to Madison St. and Young to Gateway Dr.). If approved, the work would be bid and, if favorable, work would commence this fall. Stay tuned for further updates on construction projects throughout the year.
As a reminder, spring bulk pickup will be held on April 8, 9, and 10, 2019. Information shared in last week’s column can be found on the city’s website. We have had just a few people ask about dumpsters for damaged items from recent flooding. Our past practice has been to secure dumpsters for damaged items if the damage is a result of a loss of power where sump pumps stopped working. If you have items damaged in this most recent flood, we advise you to take advantage of the bulk pickup as scheduled.
Around town, Waupun Figure Skating Club will present their annual ice show which this year is themed Heroes and Villains on April 5, 6 and 7 at the Waupun Community Center. Times can be found on the Waupun Festivals website calendar. I hope to see you there!
