Waupun to Run Department of Corrections Fire Drill on July 2

Community will notice emergency personnel at Waupun Memorial Hospital

Waupun, Wis. – June 28, 2018 – Benjamin Franklin once said that “by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” This is especially true when it comes to emergency personnel preparing for unexpected disasters like fires, tornadoes, chemical spills, multi-vehicle accidents and much more.

And, come the evening of July 2, Waupun area residents may see the most recent collaborative effort between the City of Waupun Police and Fire Departments, Wisconsin Department of Corrections, and Waupun Memorial Hospital, as they conduct a fire drill exercise in the secured Department of Corrections unit.

“It’s very important that we take time to review and practice the pre-plans we have in place for the larger target hazards within the City, says B.J. DeMaa, Waupun Fire Chief. “In emergency situations, there is already a lot of confusion as the event unfolds. Knowing ahead of time how we will render aid and what roles each party plays is what contributes to a successful outcome. Our duty is to ensure our community and the people affected will be best served.”

This drill will give both Department of Corrections and Waupun Memorial Hospital staff the opportunity to review their respective fire emergency practices, as well as utilize med sleds to transport a manikin down the stairwells. No actual inmates will be involved.

“This drill will help us continue our preparedness efforts within the hospital,” says Patty Walgenbach, RN, BSN, Waupun Memorial Hospital emergency preparedness coordinator. “And, by having this drill in the evening, we will be exposing even more of our providers and employees to enhance their knowledge of what we would do when a fire may unexpectedly arise and how we will collaborate with our community partners to ensure everyone’s safety.” So, when the community perhaps sees some of this scenario unfolding on July 2, they will know they are in good hands should a tragedy occur.

“Our focus is to be engaged in training that helps all parties meet the needs and expectations of the community,” according to DeMaa. “It is great to be working alongside Waupun Memorial Hospital for the second year in a row on a large scale exercise.”
