A Firework Safety Reminder from the Waupun Fire Department
As the 4th of July approaches, fires and injuries related to fireworks increase. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission "There were an estimated 12,900 fireworks-related, emergency department-treated injuries in 2017...Sparklers were the number one cause of injuries, accounting for 14% of the estimated injuries."
As a reminder, if fireworks leave the ground or explode, they are illegal to set off without a permit. For fireworks that don't fall into the categories listed above, please remember these safety tips:
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
- If lighting fireworks, remember to wear protective eye wear.
- Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
- Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
- Soak spent fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding them.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of a fire.
- Never use fireworks if you've consumed alcohol.
We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday. Please leave the fireworks to the professionals!
