Mayor's Community Update - 08/27/2018
Greetings! As we move through the final month of summer, I am happy to update you on our Department of Public Works (DPW) projects. The road construction project on Walker Street is running on time. Utility replacement is complete and the street is being excavated and prepared with new base materials. Additionally, spot curb and sidewalk repairs have been completed. In preparation for our 2019 road project plans, we recently held a project kickoff meeting for the Madison Street reconstruction project. Assuming the capital budget is approved with this project later this fall, we have tentatively identified a construction timeline of April through December of 2019 to complete this project.
The DPW team also reported that they have recently noticed a number of residents blowing grass clippings in the street. As a reminder, grass clippings that end up in the street eventually wash into the storm sewer. This water is not treated and empties to the Rock River and eventually the Horicon Marsh. When grass and all the chemicals that grass is commonly treated with enter the storm sewer, it impacts the quality of our rivers, streams and lakes. Those chemicals include phosphorus and the WI DNR has set standards for stormwater phosphorus levels that we must meet. If we are unable to reduce phosphorus levels, we should anticipate increased future costs associated with stormwater management. It starts with each of us working to comply with our city ordinance and we appreciate your support.
Currently, when DPW crews encounter grass clippings in the street they are handing out door hangers that explain the ordinance. If we all work together we can improve the quality of our waterways for future generations. Fall yard waste cleanup dates are set for October 15 through November 16, weather permitting.
Around town, Police and Fire officials recently participated in the “Cops on the Roof” event at Dunkin’ Donuts to raise money for Special Olympics. Thanks to all who supported this great cause. See you around town!
