Mayor's Community Update - 06/22/19

Greetings!  Road construction season in well underway and, as many have commented, it seems like there is an orange barrel around every corner.  While we know it is frustrating, we appreciate your patience as crews work to make needed improvements throughout the community.  Our primary project on Madison Street is progressing on schedule.  As you have probably seen, crews are now working on the Main and Madison Street intersection and that has caused significant traffic congestion in our downtown.  Please be patient, the work on this intersection is expected to be complete by July 4, weather dependent, and we are still on track to have North Madison Street opened in time for the 30th annual Waupun Truck ‘n Show in August.  Each week, we are publishing the construction news to keep you informed on the progress of this project.  Look for the latest updates in our community newsletter, on our website and through social media channels.

Our downtown is our commercial core and I want to recognize the commitment of those small business owners who continue to invest in Waupun and who endure many challenges during this type of a construction project.  If you are not already aware, the Waupun Chamber of Commerce is challenging you to Brave the Barrels and continue to shop local this summer.  For each purchase you make at participating businesses, you will receive a punch on a loyalty card.  All returned punch cards will be entered to win in a drawing for a $100, $50, or $25 gift certificate good at participating businesses.  A list of participating businesses can be found on the Chamber’s website, Facebook page or by asking local merchants.  Don’t delay, the first Brave the Barrels drawing will be held on July 19.  All of our Main and Madison Street businesses are accessible during construction.  Parking is available to businesses north of Main Street in city lots located behind the businesses.  You can access those lots from Franklin Street off from Mill or Fond du Lac Streets.  Businesses located to the south of Main Street have city parking behind the businesses as well which can be accessed from either Carrington or Mill Streets.  Note that parking will return to Main Street as soon as the Main and N Madison Street intersection is complete later this month.  There are some unique businesses in our downtown and I hope you choose to shop local and Brave the Barrels!

Around town, we’re in full preparation mode for Celebrate Waupun which will be held June 28 through 30 at Tanner Park.  As a reminder, Spring Street will close for festival setup on Tuesday, June 25, and will remain closed until Monday, July 1.  Please plan to use Brandon Street to Edgewood Drive as an alternate route to access Spring Street if needed during that time.   The full Celebrate Waupun events schedule can be found at waupunfestivals.com.   The Waupun Festivals committee and all Waupun city staff are looking forward to celebrating with you and we hope to see you for this great community event!
