Mayor's Community Update - 06/04/2018
Greetings! Thank you and congratulations to Evan Rhodes who was selected to be Mayor for the Day during our Memorial Day parade. Evan was the winner of our “What Memorial Day Means to Me” essay contest and did a fantastic job of fulfilling the role of mayor.
I’ve written in the past about the importance of workforce as it relates to growing our economic base. Workforce challenges are not unique to the private sector. Municipal governments across the country are finding it difficult to fill positions and specifically struggle to fill public safety roles in police and fire, and Waupun is no exception. This challenge has caused our team to think differently about how they work to recruit and retain talent. The Waupun Police Department recently decided to change their recruitment strategies and is accepting applications from individuals with 60 or more college credits who desire to be a police officer. The department no longer requires applicants to be eligible for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification upon application and instead will be sponsoring selected applicants through the police academy to become certification eligible. This change in our recruitment process allows us to broaden the pool of potential candidates for open positions and was necessary to compete for qualified candidates in a very challenging job market. Please share this information with anyone that you may know who may be interested in becoming a police officer and encourage them to apply today.
Around town this weekend, the Waupun Farmer’s Market kicks off their summer season in the parking lot by City Hall. And, the Waupun Aquatic Center officially opens for the season. On Tuesday, June 5, the Waupun Chamber hosts their annual golf outing at The Rock Golf Club. More information can be found about these events and more on the Community Tab of the City’s website.
See you around town! ~ Mayor Julie Nickel
